What is Wordpress?
So why would you want a Wordpress web site?
You may be asking " What is Wordpress? "
Wordpress began as a blogging program. What is a blog? It is a word which has evolved from the combination of two words, web and log. A blog is like a diary or a journal which you add information to in the way of text, images, video and so on. A blog is usually presented in chronological order so that the latest post on the blog is the most current. It can have a specific theme such as your hobby, your political views, your travel… but can also be quite general in its content.
You may be thinking, " I don’t want or need a blog ". This may be true but Wordpress is not just a blogging program, it is a CMS (content management system) . With Wordpress, you are able to update, add to and change the appearance of your site very easily and you don’t need to be a web developer.
What is a post?
The structure of a blog consists of posts which are usually arranged in chronological order with the last posting appearing first in the blog. However, it is possible to make a post "sticky" which means that particular post will always appear first on the list. This "sticky" post might be used as an introduction to the blog. Posts are generally given a title and can be assigned categories and post tags. A category is a general name associated with a post and allows posts to be grouped together as having a common theme. Tags are words which relate more specifically to a post. Both categories and tags contribute to the filing system of the blog and make searching the blog easier. An example might be a travel blog of France; there may be a category Paris with tags or keywords of the Eiffel Tower, restaurants, art gallery and so on.Posts can contain text, images and other media; they can have links to other web sites. Posts can be interactive and allow comments from viewers of the posts with responses from the author of the post.
